Parenting After Separation – March 5, 2012

Parenting After Separation is a three hour, 20 minute information session for parents, sponsored by the Ministry of Attorney General. Its purpose is to help parents make informed choices about separation — choices that take into account the best interests of their children. The sessions are led by facilitators who are experienced in helping families.

Session times are 6:00 – 9:30 pm, and all participants must register before the session. To register, contact The Advocacy Centre at 250-352-5777.

Child poverty report released

First Call BC: BC Child and Youth Advocacy Coalition released it’s annual child poverty report card this week. According to the report card, the child poverty rate in British Columbia rose from 14.5 percent in 2008 to 16.4% in 2009 using Statistics Canada’s low income cut-offs before tax as a measure of poverty. The after-tax rate rose from 10.4 percent in 2008 to 12 percent in 2009 – the highest of any province for the eighth consecutive year. Alarmingly, the poverty rate for children under age six was 20.2%, or one in five young children.

The report proposes a range of solutions that fall within the scope of both provincial and federal government policies. Download the report card here.
